Reading Readiness: Preschooler-Parent Shared Reading – $3,600:
Community and Parent Involvement Specialist, Ms. Blake Faison, is passionate about promoting early literacy skills. To establish family reading routines for Spanish and English-speaking parents and their children, over 60 Morris School District preschoolers and their parents enjoyed monthly Bilingual Book Club at several of the District's preschool locations. After reading and discussing the book, a craft is completed around the book's theme, which allows children to spend quality time with their families in an educational setting promoting reading, storytelling, and working with their hands.
These reading opportunities also show parents how to use books to teach their children early literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, letter recognition, numeracy, colors, rhymes, singing, and vocabulary.
This successful program has been running for more than 10 years, thanks to the dedicated educators in the District's preschool and a generous MEF donor.
