Description:
The Javier Avelar Scholarship is given in memory of Javier Avelar, a beloved Morristown High School graduate, who died after an 18-month battle with colon cancer. The scholarship is sponsored by the Golden Bagel Runners. A minimum of $2,500 will be awarded annually to one or more Morristown High School seniors, who are first-generation immigrants with financial need and plans to continue their education at a two or four-year college or trade school.
Criteria:
Applicant must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The student must be a first-generation immigrant and is required to write an essay about his/her experience moving to the United States and explaining his/her future goals. The student may be assisted by his/her guidance counselor, if necessary.
To be considered for this scholarship, the Morristown High School senior must:
- Submit a complete MEF Common Scholarship Application online
- Have a minimum weighted GPA of 2.5
- Apply to or have been accepted by an accredited 2 or 4-year college, university or trade school
- Be a first-generation immigrant
- Demonstrate financial need
Application Requirements:
- MEF Common Scholarship Application with current transcript
- Complete the following Supplemental Essay (250 words or less):
- Write about your experience moving to the United States and explain your future goals.*
- Complete the Financial Information Application Supplement
- If chosen as a recipient, you will need to provide proof of enrollment at a college or trade school
Application Review & Selection:
The recipient of this scholarship will be selected by the MHS Guidance Department.
*If necessary, the student may be assisted by his/her guidance counselor.
