Description:

The Shirley Shalit Scholarship was established to honor lifelong Morristown resident and Morristown High School alumna, Shirley Domb Shalit (Class of ’39). Shirley grew up in Morristown on Washington Avenue.  She loved to read and walked to the town library to absorb everything she could on the shelves.  In 1942, she married Nathan Shalit. After having two children, she enrolled at Drew University and ultimately graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.  After graduation, she went on to work for text book publisher, Silver Burdett, where she became a senior social studies editor.  Shirley had a lifelong love of learning and literature which her daughter, Barbara, chose to honor with the establishment of this scholarship in her name.

Criteria:

The scholarship will be open to all students who are pursuing a major in the Humanities with a preference for English Literature at a two or four-year college. The scholarship must be used to pay tuition at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university. 

To be considered for this scholarship, the Morristown High School senior must:

  • Submit a complete MEF Common Scholarship Application online
  • Apply to or have been accepted by an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university
  • Be pursuing a major in the Humanities with a preference for English Literature 
  • Preference for students with financial need, but not required

Application Requirements:

  • MEF Common Scholarship Application with current transcript
  • Financial Need Supplement
  • Complete the following Supplemental Essay (500 words or less):
    • Shirley Shalit loved to read and was known to have said that she read every book on the shelves in the Morristown Library.  What is your favorite reading matter (can be a book, poem, article, graphic novel, etc.) and why?
  • Provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher in the humanities that addresses why this student should be chosen for this scholarship.
